WHY BRACES STILL MATTER
Straight Teeth Are Only Part of the Picture.
Braces use brackets and archwires to apply controlled pressure that gradually moves teeth. They can correct crowding, spacing, rotated teeth, and many bite problems.
Treatment may address:
Crowded or overlapping teeth
Gaps between teeth
Overbite
Underbite
Crossbite
Teeth that are rotated or poorly positioned
The goal is not simply to make teeth look straighter. The orthodontist also considers how your upper and lower teeth meet, function, and fit together.
METAL OR CLEAR
The Right Appliance Depends on the Right Treatment.
Not every patient needs the same appliance. We offer traditional metal brackets and ceramic or clear brackets, as well as Spark clear aligners for appropriate cases.
Metal braces use brackets and wires to provide continuous control over tooth movement. We use 3M brackets for consistent, precise treatment.
Clear braces use ceramic or clear brackets for patients who prefer a less noticeable fixed appliance.
Spark clear aligners offer a removable, less visible option for patients whose treatment can be effectively managed with aligners.
If you are comparing metal braces with clear braces or aligners, the most important question is not which one looks best. It is which approach is appropriate for your teeth, bite, lifestyle, and ability to follow treatment instructions.
We will give you an honest recommendation and explain why.
WHO BRACES ARE FOR
Children, Teens, and Adults All Have Different Needs.
Braces are not limited to one age group. The right time for treatment depends on dental development, the bite, and the problems that need to be corrected.
For children
An early orthodontic evaluation does not mean your child automatically needs braces. It gives us the opportunity to identify developing problems and determine whether treatment should begin now, later, or not at all. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic evaluation by age 7.
For Teens
The teenage years are a common time for comprehensive orthodontic treatment. Permanent teeth are generally in place, making it possible to address alignment and bite concerns more completely.
At Vincent & Bullwinkel, we believe teens should understand their treatment, not simply have it explained to their parents. We talk with them about what is happening, what we need from them, and how they can help keep treatment on track. That approach is central to the braces for teens in Charleston, SC experience we provide.
For Adults
There is no expiration date on orthodontic treatment. Adults may seek treatment for crowding, bite problems, shifting after previous orthodontic treatment, or concerns they have put off for years.
Our approach to adult braces in Charleston, SC is just as individualized. We consider your dental health, treatment goals, and lifestyle before recommending a treatment plan, so your orthodontic care fits the life you already have.
WHAT TREATMENT LOOKS LIKE
It Takes a Team to Create Your Best Smile
Every patient who sits in that chair is trusting us with something that matters to them, and we don't take that lightly.
But orthodontic treatment is not something we do to you. It's something we do with you. The brackets and wires do their job when you do yours: keeping your teeth clean, wearing your elastics if prescribed, showing up to your appointments, and staying engaged in your own progress.
No Guesswork. Just a Clear Plan.
Your consultation
We begin by looking at your teeth, your bite, and what you want to change. You will have time to ask questions and understand your treatment options.
Your treatment plan
Every treatment plan starts from scratch. We consider your specific alignment, bite, dental development, and goals before recommending an approach.
Braces placement
Placing braces typically takes about 60 to 90 minutes. Your teeth may feel different immediately, and mild soreness is common for a few days as your teeth respond to gentle pressure.
Regular appointments
Most patients return about every six to eight weeks. These visits allow Dr. Bullwinkel to personally review your progress, make adjustments, and keep treatment moving appropriately.
Braces come off
Once your teeth reach their planned positions, your braces are removed. But treatment is not quite finished.
Retention begins
Retainers help protect your result because teeth can naturally shift over time.
HOW LONG DO BRACES TAKE?
Your Timeline Depends on What We Are Correcting.
Many comprehensive cases take approximately 18 to 24 months, but treatment time depends on the complexity of your case and how your teeth respond.
Your timeline can also be affected by missed appointments, broken brackets, oral hygiene, and whether you wear elastics as instructed.
We will give you an estimated timeline based on your specific treatment rather than promising the same number to everyone.
LIVING WITH BRACES
Braces Become Part of Your Routine.
Getting used to braces usually happens faster than patients expect. You can continue school, work, sports, performances, and everyday activities while wearing them.
You will need to make a few adjustments.
Keep your teeth clean. Brush carefully around your brackets and continue regular dental cleanings with your general dentist.
Choose foods carefully. Hard, sticky, and crunchy foods can damage brackets or wires.
Wear elastics as directed. When elastics are prescribed, they are part of your treatment. Consistent wear can make an important difference in correcting your bite.
Keep your appointments. Regular visits let us monitor movement and make adjustments when needed.
If a bracket or wire breaks, contact our office so we can determine what needs to be done.
BRACES ARE A TEAM EFFORT
The Appliance Does Its Job. You Have a Part in It.
Braces provide the force needed to move your teeth. Your job is to help us keep treatment on track.
That means keeping your teeth clean, following food instructions, wearing elastics when prescribed, and showing up for appointments.
Orthodontic treatment is something we do with you, not simply something we do to you.

3M brackets:
We use 3M brackets for our traditional metal braces and offer ceramic or clear brackets for patients who prefer a less visible option.
When you choose Braces treatment in Charleston, SC with us, you are choosing months of care and regular visits with your orthodontic team. We think you should know who is overseeing that care and why your treatment is being recommended.
AFTER BRACES
Your braces come off, but your teeth still need support.
Teeth are living structures, and they can shift without retention. Our retention recommendations are tailored to your specific needs and may include a fixed lower retainer bonded behind the front teeth and a removable upper retainer.
Finishing Treatment Is Only Half the Job
Smile Assurance
We also offer Smile Assurance, providing five retainers per year for five years following treatment. Retainers get lost. Kids leave them on lunch trays. Life happens. Smile Assurance helps make sure a missing retainer does not become a reason for your smile to shift.
